Blood Blockade Battlefront
Yasuhiro Nightow
Overview
Leonardo Watch never asked for the All-Seeing Eyes of the Gods. After his sister lost her sight in a mysterious event, he gained the ability to perceive hidden truths and see through illusions. He moves to Hellsalem's Lot, formerly New York City, now a chaotic bubble where humans and demons coexist after a dimensional breach. To find answers and save his sister, he joins Libra, a secret organization of superpowered misfits who keep the peace between worlds. Libra's leader, Klaus Von Reinherz, can trap enemies in blood crosses. Zapp Renfro is a hot-headed fighter with blood-controlling abilities. Chain Sumeragi is a sadistic werewolf. Together they face terrorists, monsters, and the King of Despair.
Yasuhiro Nightow, best known for Trigun, started Blood Blockade Battlefront as a one-shot in Jump Square in May 2008. That early version was darker, focused on vampire hunting in a contemporary city. A three-chapter preview ran from January to March 2009, followed by another one-shot in October 2009. The main series launched in Jump SQ.19 in May 2010 and ran until the magazine's final issue in February 2015. Shueisha collected the 10 tankōbon volumes. Dark Horse Comics publishes the English edition, including omnibus editions that bundle multiple volumes.
Two sequels continue the story: Back 2 Back (2015-2022) and Beat 3 Peat, which began in October 2022. The franchise also includes a 12-episode anime by Studio Bones in 2015, directed by Rie Matsumoto, with a second season in 2017. Critics praise the series for its inventive world-building, strong character dynamics, and Nightow's signature over-the-top action. The anime's visual style and energetic storytelling have been particularly well-received.
