About This Album
Blame It on the Boogie started life as a demo by English singer-songwriter Mick Jackson, who co-wrote the track with his brother Dave Jackson and Elmar Krohn. Mick's original version, released in 1978 on his self-titled album, featured a funky disco groove with a prominent bassline and handclaps. But it was the Jacksons' cover that turned the song into a global smash. Recorded for their 1978 album Destiny on Epic Records, the Jacksons' version added a tighter rhythm section, layered harmonies, and Michael Jackson's dynamic lead vocals. The track became the album's lead single, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the R&B chart. The Jacksons' rendition is built around a catchy piano riff, a steady four-on-the-floor beat, and a call-and-response chorus that invites listeners to sing along. Lyrically, the song blames a romantic attraction on the irresistible power of dancing.
Destiny marked a turning point for the group, as they took greater creative control and moved away from the Motown sound toward a more funk-driven style. The album contained eight tracks, with Blame It on the Boogie setting the tone for their new direction. The Jacksons produced the album themselves at Dawnbreaker Studios in Los Angeles, with Greg Phillinganes contributing the iconic piano riff. The album also featured the hit single Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground), which became a concert staple. Destiny peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the Top Soul Albums chart, earning a Platinum certification from the RIAA in 1979. At the 22nd Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
