Niander Wallace, a ruthless industrialist, has resurrected replicant production with his new Nexus-9 models, designed to be perfectly obedient. Officer K, a Nexus-9 replicant himself, works for the LAPD as a blade runner, hunting down and retiring older, rogue replicant models. Despite his manufactured nature, K grapples with his own sense of identity, finding solace in his holographic companion Joi and his memories, which he believes are his own.

During a routine assignment to retire a rogue replicant named Sapper Morton, K unearths a hidden box containing the cremated remains of a female replicant who died during a caesarean section. This discovery is monumental: it suggests that replicants can reproduce biologically, a feat previously thought impossible. The secret could shatter the fragile peace between humans and replicants, potentially igniting a new war. K's superior, Lieutenant Joshi, a pragmatic and weary officer, orders him to find and eliminate the replicant child and destroy all evidence.
