Black Parade

Beyoncé dropped "Black Parade" on June 19, 2020, Juneteenth, with zero warning. The song arrived during a summer when protests against police brutality and systemic racism had swept across the United States following the murder of George Floyd. Instead of a somber protest ballad, Beyoncé delivered something more layered: a celebration of Black resilience, heritage, and joy that also carried sharp political undertones.

The track opens with a spoken-word sample from activist and poet Maya Angelou, then launches into a groove built around a sample of the 1969 soul song "Shortnin' Bread" by the group The Unifies. Lyrically, Beyoncé name-checks everything from Black-owned businesses to HBCUs, from the 1963 Birmingham church bombing to the 2020 uprising. She shouts out her own Houston roots and references figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Assata Shakur. The chorus, "I'm going back to the South / I'm going back, back, back", reclaims the American South as a site of Black origin and strength rather than just trauma.

Beyoncé co-wrote the song with a team that included her husband Jay-Z, along with producers Derek Dixie, Mike Will Made-It, and others. The recording process was remarkably quick: she wrote and recorded the track in just a few days, responding directly to the national moment. Within hours of its release, the song had become an anthem for protests and Juneteenth celebrations across the country. Proceeds from the single were donated to the NAACP's Black-led small business fund, BeyGOOD's Black Business Impact Fund, administered by the National Urban League. [edit]
