Biocon
India"Building a healthier world through biotechnology"
About
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon in 1978 as a joint venture with an Irish brewing enzyme manufacturer. The company started by producing enzymes for India's dairy industry before pivoting to biopharmaceuticals in the 1990s. This shift made it the first Indian firm to manufacture recombinant insulin, setting a precedent for affordable medicine in emerging markets.
Today the Bengaluru-based giant operates across 120 nations with headquarters also in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Its business splits into two main arms: Biocon Biologics handles complex biosimilars and novel biologics while Biocon Pharma manages generic formulations. The company recently opened a flexible insulin drug substance facility in India using proprietary technology designed for fungible manufacturing capabilities.
Financial scale remains significant with market capitalization exceeding ₹63,900 crore ($7.6 billion) and annual revenues near ₹17,321 crore ($2.1 billion). A strategic push toward the $1 billion revenue mark for its biosimilars segment drives current operations despite facing legal hurdles from Roche over a breast cancer drug copy and logistical damage from a September 2026 strike in Ukraine.
