    Overview

Kevin Yamagata, a Japanese-American comic artist in 1960s New York, draws a popular detective series starring a masked hero called Billy Bat. One day he realizes the bat image might not be his own invention, he remembers seeing a similar drawing years earlier while stationed in occupied Japan after World War II. Traveling to Japan to track down the original artist, Kevin stumbles into a labyrinth of murder, secret societies, and historical conspiracies. The bat symbol, it turns out, has appeared across centuries and continents: in feudal Japan, Nazi Germany, and the American Civil War. Each appearance is tied to a prophetic manuscript and a shadowy organization that manipulates world events.

The narrative leaps between time periods and locations, weaving real historical figures into a fictional web. The JFK assassination, the Apollo moon landing, and occult experiments in Nazi Germany all intersect with Kevin's quest. As he digs deeper, the line between his comic and reality blurs, forcing him to question whether he created Billy Bat or was merely a vessel for something ancient and dangerous. The story is a dense puzzle box, rewarding readers who pay close attention to recurring motifs and seemingly minor details.

Urasawa and Nagasaki spent eight years serializing Billy Bat in Kodansha's Morning magazine, from October 2008 to August 2016. The complete run fills 20 volumes. The English edition, released by Vertical Comics and later Kodansha USA between 2017 and 2021, maintains the original cover designs. No anime, film, or stage adaptation has been produced, though fans have long hoped for one. The series has sold over 3 million copies in Japan and appeared on the New York Times manga bestseller list.
