Simmons has been named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People in the World (2012). He was inducted into the Sports Media Hall of Fame in 2021 and the Boston Sports Media Hall of Fame in 2022. He received the National Sports Media Association's Sportswriter of the Year award in 2014 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sports Podcast Awards in 2024. His 30 for 30 series won a Peabody Award and multiple Sports Emmys, and his podcast has won a Webby and iHeartRadio award.
