Beyond Good & Evil 2
"The prequel that has spent 18 years in pre-production."
Overview
Few games have spent as long in the public eye without actually coming out as Beyond Good & Evil 2. Ubisoft Montpellier announced it at Ubidays in 2008 as a prequel to the 2003 cult favorite, then went quiet for nearly a decade. The re-reveal at Ubisoft's E3 2017 press conference showed a very different game: a sprawling action-adventure with action role-playing systems, set in a multi-planet star system called System 3. Players would build a crew of pirates and hybrids, fly between worlds, and fight for freedom against a colonial regime. The tone leaned on player choice, ship customization, and online co-op, and the scale was far larger than the original's stealth-and-photography setup. No release window or final platform list has ever been confirmed, though Ubisoft has consistently listed Microsoft Windows among its targets.
October 2026 reporting from multiple outlets described the project as still in pre-production roughly 18 years after its first announcement. That same coverage said Ubisoft had spent around three years trying to reshape the game into a live-service "Fortnite killer," an effort insiders now call wasted, before pivoting to a "solo-first" single-player adventure that retains co-op. Combat in the current reported build has been compared to the PlayStation Spider-Man games. The team has reportedly added another writer, one with Assassin's Creed credits, suggesting the project is still active even as its vision keeps changing.
Composer Christophe Héral, who scored the 2003 original, remains attached. No engine has been officially confirmed. The E3 2018 pre-alpha demo showed large-scale planetary and space environments, but final graphics capabilities are unknown since the game has never shipped. There are no review scores, sales figures, awards, or DLC to report. Multiplayer exists as a co-op component, though its scope has fluctuated: once central to a live-service model, now secondary to a solo-first design.
Gameplay
The official pitch describes an action-adventure RPG playable alone or with friends in co-op, with combat taking place on planets and in space at a "massively" large scale. The E3-era vision centered on System 3, a multi-planet star system where players build a crew of pirates and hybrids, fly between worlds in customizable ships, and fight a colonial regime, with an emphasis on player choice and online co-op. The earlier 2008 conception was closer to the original's stealth-and-photography formula, while the current reported build leans into solo-first superhero-style melee combat.
