United States"When life gives you lemons, ski downhill."
Savage Steve Holland's 1985 teen comedy, Better Off Dead..., throws a high school ski racer named Lane Meyer (John Cusack) into a tailspin after his girlfriend, Beth Truss (Amanda Wyss), ditches him for the school's resident jock, Roy Stalin (Aaron Dozier). What follows is a descent into a darkly comedic world where Lane's suicidal ideation becomes the engine for increasingly absurd situations.
Cusack navigates this bizarre landscape with a blend of deadpan delivery and escalating desperation. He's supported by a memorable cast, including Diane Franklin as Monique Junot, the charming French exchange student who inadvertently becomes a central figure in Lane's chaotic life, and Curtis Armstrong as the unforgettable, albeit slightly unhinged, friend Charles De Mar. The film, produced by Michael Jaffe for A&M Films and CBS Theatrical Films on a modest $3.5 million budget, went on to earn over $10 million at the box office. While its critical reception was mixed upon release, Better Off Dead... has since found a devoted cult following, celebrated for its unique brand of surreal humor and Cusack's early, standout performance.

Lane Meyer, a high school ski racer, finds his world crumbling when his girlfriend, Beth, dumps him for the arrogant Roy Stalin. This rejection sends Lane into a spiral of despair, leading him to contemplate suicide. The film chronicles his increasingly bizarre and unsuccessful attempts to end his life, each one more absurd than the last.
His family life doesn't offer much solace. His mother, Jenny, is overly enthusiastic and somewhat oblivious, while his father, Al, is absorbed in his own television show. Adding to the surreal atmosphere is Lane's best friend, Charles De Mar, whose wild ideas and commentary only amplify the strangeness of Lane's predicament. Lane's obsession with winning Beth back fuels many of his misguided actions, constantly undermined by Roy's taunts and Lane's own self-sabotage.
Amidst this chaos, Lane encounters Monique Junot, a captivating French exchange student who finds his eccentric behavior intriguing. Monique begins to pull Lane out of his funk, encouraging him to see the humor in his dire circumstances. Their developing relationship becomes a beacon of hope amidst Lane's personal turmoil.
The narrative is punctuated by Lane's vivid fantasies and daydreams, which often blend seamlessly with reality, making it difficult to distinguish between what's real and what's in his head. These sequences include encounters with a talking snowman, a street vendor offering a peculiar two-dollar loan, and a challenging ski race against a group of Japanese skiers. The film builds towards a climactic ski race, a high-stakes event where Lane must confront his rival, Roy, and, more importantly, his own internal struggles.
