Overview
Origin Story
Bertholdt Hoover was born in the Marleyan internment zone, raised as a Warrior candidate indoctrinated to believe that reclaiming the Founding Titan would earn Eldian redemption. At age 12, he was chosen to inherit the Colossal Titan, one of the Nine Titans, from an unnamed predecessor. In the year 845, Bertholdt, alongside Reiner Braun and Annie Leonhart, was sent to breach the walls of Paradis Island. He transformed into the Colossal Titan to kick open the gate of Wall Maria, allowing countless Titans to flood the district of Shiganshina. This event, known as the Fall of Wall Maria, caused massive casualties and set the story in motion.
To avoid suspicion, Bertholdt and Reiner joined the 104th Training Corps under false identities, graduating with high marks. Bertholdt ranked third in his class. For five years, he maintained his cover while aiding Marley's mission to locate the Founding Titan. His true identity was exposed during the Female Titan arc, and he later participated in the battle for Wall Rose and the Clash of the Titans arc, where his Colossal Titan form wreaked havoc. He was ultimately defeated and killed by Armin Arlert during the Battle of Shiganshina, with Armin inheriting the Colossal Titan.
Personality
Bertholdt is quiet, reserved, and deeply introverted. He avoids conflict and often defers to Reiner's leadership. He carries immense guilt over the destruction he caused, particularly the deaths of innocent people during the breach of Wall Maria. This guilt makes him hesitant and emotionally burdened, struggling to reconcile his duty as a Warrior with his growing attachment to the people of Paradis. He is introspective and prone to self-doubt, often appearing weak-willed. However, he can be resolute when forced to act, showing a capacity for ruthlessness in combat.
