August 25, 1989 marked the beginning of a three-decade saga when Kentaro Miura launched Berserk in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine. The story introduces Guts, a wandering mercenary branded as the Black Swordsman, who carries a massive sword and a life defined by violence. His path crosses with Griffith, the charismatic leader of the Band of the Hawk, setting off a chain of events that transforms a tale of survival into a relentless pursuit of revenge after a catastrophic betrayal.

Miura crafted a grim medieval world where demonic forces lurk in every shadow and the line between humanity and monstrosity blurs. The narrative delves into the psychological scars left by trauma, the corrosive weight of unchecked ambition, and the struggle to carve out free will against predetermined fate. While the series features visceral battles and explicit content, its core remains the enduring power of human connection amidst overwhelming darkness.

Following Miura's death in May 2021, the completion of the manga fell to his close friend Kōji Mori and the Studio Gaga team. They are working from Miura's detailed notes and outlines to bring the story to its intended conclusion. The English release has been managed by Dark Horse Comics, which publishes omnibus editions and individual volumes, keeping the series accessible to new readers while respecting the complex production history.
