Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, is a professional football club based in Lisbon, Portugal. Founded on February 28, 1904, the club is one of the "Big Three" in Portuguese football, alongside Sporting CP and FC Porto, and is the only club besides those two never to have been relegated from the Primeira Liga. Benfica is the most decorated club in Portugal, with 88 major trophies, including a record 38 Primeira Liga titles and back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962. The club's home ground is the Estádio da Luz, which opened in 2003 and replaced the original stadium built in 1954. With over 400,000 members as of February 2025, Benfica holds the Guinness World Record for the largest sports club by membership.

Benfica's supporters, known as benfiquistas, are the most numerous in Portugal and among the most passionate in Europe. The club's anthem, "Ser Benfiquista," and its mascot, Águia Vitória, an eagle that circles the stadium before matches, are central to matchday culture. The team's nickname "As Águias" (The Eagles) comes from the eagle atop the club crest, while "Os Encarnados" (The Reds) refers to the iconic red shirts. Benfica was founded on 28 February 1904 by a group of former members of the Grupo Sport Benfica, initially as Sport Lisboa. Later that year, the club merged with Sport Benfica, adopting its current name. The club quickly established itself as a powerhouse, winning its first Campeonato de Portugal in 1929–30. The arrival of Eusébio in 1960 marked a golden era: Benfica won back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962, becoming the first club to break Real Madrid's monopoly. Eusébio, known as the "Black Panther," scored 473 goals for the club and won the Ballon d'Or in 1965.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Benfica continued to dominate domestically, winning multiple league titles and reaching several European finals, though they fell short each time. The club's 1987 European Cup final loss to Porto was particularly painful, as it was the first all-Portuguese final. The 1990s saw a decline relative to rivals Porto, but Benfica remained competitive. The turn of the millennium brought new hope with the construction of the new Estádio da Luz, which hosted the 2004 UEFA Euro final. Under managers like Jorge Jesus and Rui Vitória, Benfica won three consecutive league titles from 2014 to 2017 and reached two Europa League finals in 2013 and 2014.

In recent years, Benfica has focused on developing young talent through its renowned Seixal academy, producing stars like João Félix, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva. The club's financial model relies heavily on player sales, which has led to frequent squad turnover but sustained success. In 2024, Bruno Lage returned as head coach, tasked with reclaiming the league title from rivals Sporting CP and Porto.
