Simmons was the third Melbourne-born player taken first overall in the NBA draft in 11 years, joining Andrew Bogut and Kyrie Irving. He is one of only a few players to win Rookie of the Year and make multiple All-Star and All-Defensive teams. His 2020 season saw him lead the league in steals while earning All-NBA and All-Defensive honors, a rare combination for a guard.

AwardsSimmons won NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018, was selected to three NBA All-Star teams, and earned All-NBA Third Team honors in 2020. He led the league in steals and made two All-Defensive First Teams. In high school, he won Naismith Prep Player of the Year and Gatorade National Player of the Year.
