Bella Shmurda

Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi performs as Bella Shmurda. This Nigerian singer and songwriter has become a defining voice in the street pop subgenre of Afrobeats. His raw storytelling draws directly from his upbringing in Ikorodu, Lagos, turning local socio-economic realities into catchy global hits. As of 2026, he remains one of the most streamed African artists on Spotify with millions of monthly listeners.

Shmurda leads Dangbana Republik, a creative collective based in Lagos that unites musicians and activists for humanitarian work. He continues to release chart-topping singles like Sanity and collaborates frequently with top-tier Nigerian artists. His presence is felt through cinematic music videos and high-energy live performances that resonate with fans across West Africa. [edit]

Born Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi in January 1996, he grew up in the bustling town of Ikorodu, located just outside Lagos. The environment shaped his perspective early on, exposing him to the struggles and resilience of working-class families. Before finding success in music, he worked various odd jobs to support himself while secretly honing his craft. He recorded demos in modest home setups, often using basic equipment to capture the sounds of his neighborhood.

His journey took a pivotal turn in 2019 when he released the track Vision 2020. The song struck a chord with listeners who saw their own stories reflected in its lyrics. Its viral spread caught the attention of Olamide, the boss of YBNL Records, who invited Shmurda to record a remix. That collaboration marked the end of his struggle years and launched him into the national spotlight, transforming him from an unknown local talent into a household name across Nigeria. [edit]

The 2019 remix of Vision 2020 featuring Olamide served as his breakthrough moment. It propelled him into the mainstream and established his signature street pop sound. He followed this success with tracks like Yawa and Shake Body, which solidified his reputation for blending emotional narratives with infectious beats. His discography continued to grow with releases like Love Nwantiti and Happy Song, each contributing to his rising star status.

In recent years, his commercial impact has reached new heights. The single Sanity surpassed 100 million Spotify streams by September 2026, marking a major milestone in his career. Collaborations have also played a significant role in his success. In September 2026, his feature on FOLA's hit It's Over alongside Zlatan debuted at number one on the Nigerian charts. These achievements demonstrate his ability to evolve his sound while maintaining strong connections with his audience. [edit]

Shmurda projects a conscious artist image rooted in the gritty reality of Lagos street life. Unlike many Afrobeats stars who focus on luxury aesthetics, his style reflects the struggles and hopes of the underprivileged. His content tone is raw and emotional, earning him a reputation as a storyteller who speaks for the common man. Media outlets often describe him as a voice for the youth, highlighting his ability to address social issues through his music. His stage presence is energetic yet intimate, creating a connection with audiences that feels genuine and unpolished. [edit]

iFANN has not yet collected fame data for this person. While he enjoys massive popularity in Nigeria and across Africa, there is no official global ranking published in the September 2026 iFANN database. His fanbase is organically referred to as "Shmurda Fans" without a formalized group name. These fans are highly active on social media, driving streaming numbers for his songs and organizing birthday tributes. Notable campaigns include pushing Sanity to 100 million streams and creating hashtags around his tributes to Mohbad. The fanbase is known for its loyalty and engagement with his humanitarian initiatives through Dangbana Republik. They respond strongly to his calls for awareness on social issues and support his charitable efforts. [edit]

Shmurda founded Dangbana Republik, a collective that goes beyond music to support community causes and provide a hub for artists. He is known for his emotional tributes to late peers; in September 2026, he paid homage to Mohbad on the third anniversary of his death, speaking about the dangers facing young artists in Nigeria. His public breakdown regarding a reported $4 million property scam in July 2026 became a significant cultural moment, sparking widespread discussions about financial literacy and fraud among Nigerian celebrities. Despite the controversy, he later denied the full extent of the loss, stating the reports were exaggerated. Fans often refer to him simply as Shmurda, and his Instagram bio frequently features the phrase "I am in progress" to reflect his ongoing artistic journey. [edit]

Information about his parents and siblings remains private, though he hails from a working-class family in Ikorodu. He lives in Lagos where he manages his creative endeavors. There are no public records of him having children or being married. His focus appears heavily directed toward his music and his leadership role within Dangbana Republik rather than his personal romantic life. He keeps his immediate family out of the public eye to maintain a boundary between his private life and his public persona. [edit]

Public information regarding Bella Shmurda's romantic life is sparse compared to other celebrities in the industry. There are no confirmed reports of marriages, engagements, or long-term public relationships documented in credible media sources up to 2026. While he has been linked in rumors to various female figures within the entertainment industry, none have been substantiated by multiple credible outlets or official statements. As of late 2026, Bella Shmurda is widely reported to be single. He has not publicly acknowledged any children. His focus appears to be heavily directed toward his music, his leadership at Dangbana Republik, and recent legal battles regarding property scams rather than his personal romantic life. [edit]

The iFANN Editorial Team estimates Bella Shmurda's net worth at approximately $4 million as of 2026. This figure reflects his earnings from music streaming royalties, live performances, and production deals. His wealth primarily stems from the massive success of his single Sanity, which generated significant revenue after crossing 100 million streams. Recent financial news has added complexity to his standing. In July 2026, he alleged he lost $4 million in a Lagos property scam, claiming he was defrauded during an interview. However, he subsequently denied the exact figure in a statement to TVC News, calling the reports exaggerated. If the loss occurred, it would represent a significant portion of his real estate holdings. Without confirmation of the scam's validity, the estimate remains steady based on his pre-scandal projections and current asset base. [edit]

While Bella Shmurda has achieved massive commercial success, specific data on major award wins is limited in available sources. He has been recognized in industry circles for his impact on the street pop genre, but there is no record of wins from major international ceremonies such as the Grammys, BET Awards, or MTV Europe Music Awards in the provided search results. His primary recognition comes from chart performance and streaming milestones. [edit]
