beIN SPORTS began its journey in November 2003 as Al Jazeera Sport, a sports broadcasting arm of the Al Jazeera Media Network. It rebranded to beIN SPORTS in January 2014, when beIN Media Group was formed as an independent holding company. The network expanded rapidly: beIN SPORTS France launched in June 2012, the Americas in August 2012, Asia in July 2013, Australia in October 2014, and Spain in August 2015. Today, it is one of the world's most significant sports broadcasters, dominating the Middle East and North Africa region and operating in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia.

beIN SPORTS is owned by beIN Media Group, chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who also serves as President of Paris Saint-Germain and sits on the FIFA Council. The group CEO is Yousef Al-Obaidly. The network's financial backing comes from Qatari sovereign wealth, allowing it to secure top-tier broadcasting rights for events like the FIFA World Cup 2026, major European football leagues, international tennis, and rugby. It operates multiple platforms: traditional TV channels, the streaming service beIN SPORTS CONNECT, the MENA-focused platform TOD (launched 2022), and the free ad-supported channel beIN SPORTS XTRA, available on Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, and others.

Controversy has shadowed the network. The beoutQ piracy operation in Saudi Arabia illegally broadcast beIN content, sparking a major legal and diplomatic conflict. Critics have also raised concerns about market dominance in the MENA region, where beIN holds a near-monopoly on major sports rights. During the 2017-2021 Qatar diplomatic crisis, several Arab nations severed ties with Qatar, affecting beIN's operations.
