Overview
Barry B. Benson finishes his college degree with a degree in beekeeping, but he finds the daily grind of making honey at the hive factory monotonous. The young bee seeks adventure beyond the hive walls and stumbles upon a reality that changes everything. He discovers humans have been harvesting their crops for centuries without paying a cent for the labor. Barry decides to take legal action against the entire human race in a trial that shakes both species to their core. DreamWorks Animation brought this story to life with a $150 million budget, turning a simple concept into a global comedy hit that grossed nearly $288 million worldwide. Director Simon J. Smith guided the project alongside writer Jerry Seinfeld, who voices the lead character Barry. The film features Renée Zellweger as Vanessa Bloome, a florist who becomes an unlikely ally, while Matthew Broderick and Patrick Warburton provide voices for the supporting cast. Critics gave it a modest rating around 6 out of 10, yet audiences enjoyed the mix of slapstick humor and unexpected legal drama. The movie blends family-friendly animation with satire, poking fun at corporate culture and environmental issues through the eyes of insects. While it does not launch a massive franchise, the film remains a memorable entry in the studio's catalog from the mid-2000s. Its unique premise about insect rights and the absurdity of human consumption keeps the tone light even when tackling serious themes.
