    Overview

BeamNG.drive is a sandbox vehicle simulation game that throws realistic physics out the window in favor of something far more chaotic: soft-body dynamics. Every car, truck, and bus in the game is built from hundreds of interconnected nodes, meaning crashes deform metal, shatter glass, and crumple frames in real time. Developed and published by Bremen-based BeamNG GmbH, the title first appeared as a tech demo on August 3, 2013, with paid alpha access. It hit Steam Early Access for Windows on May 29, 2015, and later arrived on Linux. A PlayStation 5 version is planned for 2026.

The game offers no traditional campaign or set objectives. Instead, players spawn into sprawling sandbox maps filled with ramps, loops, and obstacles, free to drive, crash, and experiment. The soft-body engine, known as BeamNG's physics system, treats each vehicle as a living structure. Tires blow out, doors fly off, and engines tear loose from their mounts. This level of detail makes the game a favorite for stunt videos, destruction comparisons, and modding communities.

BeamNG GmbH also produces BeamNG.tech, a fork of the game tailored for industrial and academic research. It strips away the sandbox fun to focus on simulation accuracy, helping engineers study vehicle dynamics and crash safety. The game itself holds a strong 9/10 on Steam, praised for its unique physics and endless replayability.

    Gameplay

There is no story. You pick a map, pick a vehicle, and the world is your crash test lab. The soft-body physics system models each car as a mesh of nodes and beams, so when you hit a barrier at 200 km/h, the hood buckles, the axle snaps, and glass rains down. You can switch between cockpit and chase cam, engage the handbrake mid-air, or launch yourself off a ramp with rocket boosters.

Vehicles range from family sedans to military trucks, each with realistic engine, transmission, and suspension tuning. The built-in editor lets you swap parts, adjust stiffness, and tweak gear ratios. Scenarios include time trials, destruction derbies, and absurd challenges like driving through a collapsing building. The modding community has created thousands of cars, maps, and Lua scripts, extending the game far beyond its original scope.
