Be Here Now

August 21, 1997 marked the release of Be Here Now, the third studio album from the English rock band Oasis. The record arrived with a sonic ambition that dwarfed their previous hits, shifting from concise Britpop anthems to a dense, psychedelic sprawl. Noel Gallagher drove this transformation by layering guitars and orchestral arrangements to an extreme degree, creating a sound many critics later labeled as bloated. The sessions took place across London at Abbey Road Studios, Ridge Farm Studio in Surrey, Olympic Studios, and Strongroom.

The lineup featured Liam Gallagher on vocals, Noel Gallagher on lead guitar, Paul McGuigan on bass, Paul Arthurs on rhythm guitar, and Alan White on drums. White replaced original drummer Tony McCarroll during the recording process. The production was notoriously chaotic, defined by excessive drug use and interpersonal conflict. Owen Morris produced the album alongside co-producer Noel Gallagher, aiming for a monumental result that often obscured individual instruments in a muddy mix.

Commercially, the album shattered records by becoming the fastest-selling debut in British history. It moved 1.47 million copies in the UK within its first year. Four singles emerged from the sessions, including "D'You Know What I Mean?" and "All Around the World," both reaching number one. Despite these sales figures, critical reception shifted rapidly. Early praise for the ambition gave way to criticism of the over-production, a sentiment that has only intensified over time.
