Battle Angel Alita: Last Order

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, known in Japan as Gunnm: Last Order, picks up right where the original Battle Angel Alita series left off, but with a crucial twist: it ignores the original's ending. Instead of the nanotechnological space flower and Alita's transformation into a flesh-and-blood being, Last Order restarts the narrative from an earlier point. Alita wakes up alone in the sky city of Tiphares, her brain and body reconstructed by the mad scientist Desty Nova. Her quest to recover her dear friend's brain from the depths of Melchizedek expands from the floating city to the far reaches of the solar system, weaving cybernetic combat, political intrigue, and philosophical questions about identity and consciousness.

The series ran from 2000 to 2014, spanning 19 volumes and over 2,000 pages. It features the Zenith of Things Tournament (ZOTT), a high-stakes competition that pits Alita and the Space Angels against formidable opponents from across the universe. Kishiro's dense plotting and intricate world-building have drawn both praise and criticism; fans note that while the series is enjoyable, it's not in the same vein as the original, with some characters diminished by expanded origin stories. The fourth omnibus collects volumes 10–12 and clocks in at over 600 pages, a testament to the narrative's ambition.
