Battle Angel Alita

Battle Angel Alita, known in Japan as Gunnm, is a cyberpunk manga by Yukito Kishiro, serialized in Shueisha's Business Jump from 1990 to 1995. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a floating utopia called Zalem hovers above the Scrapyard, a sprawling city built on the ruins of the old world. Daisuke Ido, a cybernetics doctor, finds the remains of a female cyborg in the junkyard and rebuilds her, naming her Alita. Though she has no memories of her past, Alita possesses an innate instinct for a legendary cyborg martial art called Panzer Kunst, which leads her to become a Hunter Warrior, a bounty hunter. As she navigates the violent and stratified society of the Scrapyard, she searches for her lost identity, and her actions ripple through the lives of everyone she meets.

The manga blends intense action with philosophical questions about identity, memory, and what it means to be human. Kishiro's detailed mechanical designs and intricate world-building have made the series a cornerstone of the cyberpunk genre in manga. The original nine volumes have been published in multiple languages by various houses, including Viz Media in North America, Glénat in France, and Carlsen in Germany. The first two volumes were adapted into a two-part anime OVA in 1993, released in North America by ADV Films. A live-action film, Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, hit theaters on February 14, 2019, starring Rosa Salazar as Alita. The film brought renewed attention to the franchise, and a dedicated fan community has campaigned for a sequel.

Kishiro continued Alita's story in sequel series: Last Order (2000–2014), Mars Chronicle (2014–2025), and Panzer Kunst Chronicle, which began in 2026. These works expand the universe, exploring Alita's origins and the history of Panzer Kunst. The series' exploration of class division, technological dystopia, and the nature of the soul has resonated with readers worldwide, cementing its place as a touchstone of dystopian science fiction.
