Battle Angel Alita

Yukito Kishiro introduced readers to a world where humanity clings to survival in Iron City, a sprawling slum built atop the ruins of the old civilization. Below the floating utopia of Zalem, Dr. Daisuke Ido scavenges for parts and discovers the decapitated head and torso of a female cyborg. He reconstructs her body with a new frame and names her Alita, though she retains no memory of her previous life. Despite her amnesia, she possesses an instinctual mastery of Panzer Kunst, a forbidden martial art designed for combat between cyborgs.

The narrative follows Alita as she navigates the violent hierarchy of the Scrapyard, working as a Hunter Warrior to hunt down criminals and protect the innocent. Her journey evolves from simple survival into a deeper inquiry about identity and the nature of the soul. Kishiro balances visceral action sequences with philosophical questions regarding class division and technological dystopia. The original series ran in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1990 until 1995, collecting nine tankōbon volumes before concluding its initial run.

While the manga ended in 1995, the story continued through sequels that expanded the universe significantly. Last Order ran from 2000 to 2014, introducing new plotlines and retconning elements of the original ending. Mars Chronicle followed from 2014 to 2025, taking the narrative to the Red Planet. In May 2026, Panzer Kunst Chronicle launched as a side story focusing on the origins of the martial art. These later works have kept the franchise active long after the first volume hit shelves.
