Batman: Knightfall
Doug Moench
Overview
When Bane, a terrifying new villain with a genius intellect and incredible physical prowess, sets his sights on Gotham's Dark Knight, Batman is pushed to his absolute limit. Bane orchestrates a relentless campaign, meticulously planning to exhaust Batman's physical and mental reserves. After months of this grueling pressure, Bane finally confronts a weakened Bruce Wayne in the Batcave and delivers a devastating blow, snapping his spine and leaving him incapacitated. This pivotal moment forces Bruce to step down, unable to continue his crusade against crime.
With Batman broken, the mantle of the Bat is passed to Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael. Initially, Valley's more brutal and aggressive approach seems effective. However, his methods quickly become increasingly violent and unstable, leading him to adopt a more ruthless persona and even develop a deadly new Batsuit. This descent into darkness not only tarnishes the symbol of Batman but also creates a deep rift between Valley and Bruce's allies, who question his fitness to wear the cowl. The story arc follows Bruce's painful recovery and his internal struggle to reclaim his identity and purpose, ultimately leading to a dramatic confrontation with the new Batman and the re-establishment of the original Batman's core values.
Knightfall is a massive crossover event that truly tested the limits of the character. It’s remembered not just for Bane breaking Batman's back, but for exploring the psychological toll of being Batman and what it truly means to be a hero. The story had a huge impact on Batman's mythos, introducing Bane as a major player and forcing the character to re-evaluate his methods and reliance on his support system. It’s a defining chapter in Batman's publishing history.
