Batman: Arkham Knight
"The end of the Knight."
Overview
Batman: Arkham Knight, released in 2015, is the climactic chapter in Rocksteady Studios' celebrated Arkham series. Set nine months after the events of Arkham City, the game finds Gotham City evacuated and under siege by Scarecrow, who threatens to unleash a fear toxin that will consume the entire East Coast. Complicating matters is the mysterious Arkham Knight, a military commander who knows Batman's every move and has united the city's criminals for a final assault. The story, written by Rocksteady's Sefton Hill, Ian Ball, and Martin Lancaster with input from comic writer Geoff Johns, brings Batman's journey to a definitive and emotional close.
Gameplay sticks to the series' strengths: fluid freeflow combat, stealth predator encounters, and detective work, all from a third-person perspective. The big new addition is the Batmobile, a fully drivable and combat-capable vehicle that lets you tear through the streets of a rain-soaked Gotham. The city itself is the largest open world in the series, packed with side missions, Riddler trophies, and optional character cameos. The Batmobile isn't just for getting around; it's used for puzzle solving and tank-like battles against drone forces, which can feel repetitive but adds a new layer to the formula.
Rocksteady started development on Arkham Knight right after Arkham City shipped in 2011, spending four years expanding their vision. The game launched on June 23, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows, with a belated Nintendo Switch port arriving in December 2023. Console versions earned strong reviews for their storytelling and gameplay, while the PC release was plagued by bugs and performance issues, forcing Warner Bros. to pull it from sale temporarily. Despite that, Arkham Knight became the fastest-selling game of 2015 and the fastest in the series, moving over 5 million copies by October. It won multiple awards including Best British Game and Best Action-Adventure Game, and is often cited as one of the best games of its generation.
Gameplay
Arkham Knight retains the third-person perspective and core mechanics that defined the series: freeflow combat lets you chain punches, counters, and gadgets against groups of thugs, while predator encounters task you with picking off armed enemies from the shadows using stealth takedowns and environmental traps. Detective vision returns, allowing you to scan crime scenes for clues and reconstruct events in real time. The major new addition is the Batmobile, a fully drivable vehicle that can be summoned anywhere. It transforms between a high-speed pursuit mode and a heavily armed battle mode, used for racing through the streets and engaging in tank combat against drone forces. The Batmobile is also required for certain puzzles, such as using its winch to pull down walls or powering up switches. The open world of Gotham is the largest in the series, with a dense, rain-slicked city divided into three islands. Players can explore freely, complete side missions involving classic rogues like the Penguin, Two-Face, and Riddler, and collect hundreds of Riddler trophies. The game also features a dual-play mechanic in certain missions, allowing you to switch between Batman and a partner like Robin or Nightwing mid-combo.
Story
The game opens on October 31, nine months after the Joker's death in Arkham City. Scarecrow broadcasts a threat across Gotham: he will release a cloudburst of fear toxin that will engulf the entire East Coast unless the city is evacuated. Commissioner Gordon orders a citywide evacuation, and Batman begins hunting Scarecrow. Along the way, he encounters the Arkham Knight, a masked military commander who leads a private army and seems to know Batman's identity and tactics. The Knight has united Gotham's criminals under a single banner, promising them control of the city if they help him destroy Batman. As the night progresses, Batman is haunted by hallucinations of the Joker, whose blood was transfused into Batman during Arkham City, causing a psychological infection. The Joker's voice taunts him, and the villain's face occasionally appears on civilians. Batman learns that the Arkham Knight is actually Jason Todd, the second Robin, who Batman believed was killed by the Joker years ago. Jason was tortured and brainwashed, and now seeks revenge. The climax takes place at the ACE Chemicals plant, where Scarecrow captures Batman, unmasks him on live television, and injects him with fear toxin. Batman experiences a nightmarish vision of his own worst fears, including the Joker's triumph. He breaks free, defeats Scarecrow, and confronts Jason Todd, ultimately offering him redemption. Jason refuses to kill Batman and leaves. Batman then turns himself in to Gordon, but the Joker's influence resurfaces. In a final hallucination, Batman locks the Joker away in his own mind, symbolically overcoming the trauma. The game ends with Batman apparently dying in a mansion explosion, but a post-credits scene shows a giant bat-shaped fear gas cloud over Gotham, and a figure resembling Batman emerging from the shadows, suggesting his legend continues.
