Batman: Arkham

Batman: Arkham is a series of action-adventure stealth games that redefined what a superhero game could be. Developed primarily by Rocksteady Studios, with notable contributions from WB Games Montréal, the franchise launched in 2009 with Batman: Arkham Asylum. That first game dropped players into a tightly designed island prison taken over by the Joker, and it immediately stood out for its fluid FreeFlow combat and predator stealth sequences. Rocksteady followed up with Arkham City in 2011, expanding the scope to a walled-off section of Gotham turned into a massive open-world prison. The game wove a dense narrative involving Hugo Strange, the Joker, and a dying Batman, earning near-universal praise.

WB Games Montréal took the reins for 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel set on Christmas Eve that showed a younger, more reckless Batman hunted by assassins. While it retained the core mechanics, it introduced a multiplayer mode and a larger map, though technical bugs held it back. Rocksteady returned for the grand finale, Batman: Arkham Knight, in 2015. Set one year after Arkham City, it brought Scarecrow’s fear toxin to a fully realized Gotham City, added the drivable Batmobile, and concluded the Joker’s arc in a haunting hallucination storyline. The series also includes spin-offs like Batman: Arkham VR and mobile titles, plus tie-in comics and an animated film, all set in the cohesive Arkhamverse continuity.[edit]

The FreeFlow combat system is the backbone of every encounter. Batman can chain light and heavy attacks, counters, and gadget strikes against groups of enemies, all with a rhythmic flow that rewards timing. The predator sequences flip the script: you stalk armed thugs from above, using vents, gargoyles, and smoke pellets to pick them off one by one. Detective Vision overlays the world with clues, enemy positions, and interactive objects, letting you plan your approach. In Arkham Knight, the Batmobile becomes a central tool for traversal and combat, transforming into a tank for vehicular battles. The series also emphasizes exploration through gliding and grappling across the open world, with Riddler trophies and side missions scattered throughout.[edit]

The Arkhamverse begins with the Joker seizing control of Arkham Asylum and poisoning Batman with Titan, a steroid-like compound. Batman fights through the asylum’s inmates and stops the Joker’s plan, but the toxin lingers. In Arkham City, Batman is trapped in a massive prison district by Hugo Strange, who knows his secret identity. Strange’s scheme involves Protocol 10, a mass execution, while the Joker reveals he is dying from the Titan cure Batman refused. The story builds to a confrontation where Batman delivers the cure to the Joker, only for the Joker to die from his own hubris. Arkham Origins flashes back to a younger Batman on Christmas Eve, hunted by eight assassins hired by Black Mask, who is secretly the Joker. The Joker’s origin is hinted at, and Batman forms his first alliance with Captain Gordon. Arkham Knight takes place a year after Arkham City. Scarecrow floods Gotham with fear toxin, forcing a citywide evacuation. The Arkham Knight, a military commander with a personal grudge, leads the assault. The Joker appears as a hallucination in Batman’s mind, a lingering effect of the Titan poisoning. The climax reveals the Arkham Knight is Jason Todd, the second Robin, whom Batman believed dead. After defeating Scarecrow, Batman fakes his own death, becoming a symbol of fear to protect Gotham from within the shadows.[edit]
