Duncan Sheik wrote "Barely Breathing" alone, and Rupert Hine produced it for Sheik's self-titled debut on Atlantic Records. Sheik died on September 18, 2026, at 56, and the New York Times ran a retrospective the next day under the headline "For Duncan Sheik, an Accidental Pop Star, One Hit Was Exactly Enough."
