United Kingdom"Banking for a Better World"
About
Quaker goldsmiths John Freame and Thomas Gould opened their doors on Lombard Street in London back in 1690. Their partnership laid the foundation for what would become one of the world's oldest financial institutions, evolving through centuries of mergers before formally adopting the name Barclays in 1896. The bank has consistently pushed boundaries in finance, most notably by deploying the first cash dispenser in 1967.
Today the institution operates from One Churchill Place in Canary Wharf with over 80,000 employees spread across more than 40 countries. It manages five distinct divisions including the UK Consumer Bank, Investment Bank, and US Consumer Bank. As of April 2026 the group held approximately $2.078 trillion in assets, securing its spot as Europe's fifth-largest bank according to S&P Global.
Leadership remains active with Jes Staley serving as Group Chief Executive alongside C. S. Venkatakrishnan as Chief Executive Officer. Recent corporate governance updates in August 2026 revealed internal share transfers involving the Group Chief Executive. The bank continues to innovate through acquisitions like the GoHenry UK unit agreed upon in August 2026 to strengthen youth banking offerings.
