Overview
Set in the gritty streets of 1980s New York City, Banana Fish follows Ash Lynx, a seventeen-year-old street gang leader with a sharp mind and a troubled past. When Ash stumbles upon a mysterious drug called "banana fish" that brainwashes its users, he uncovers a vast criminal conspiracy that puts him in the crosshairs of powerful enemies. Along the way, he meets Eiji Okumura, a gentle Japanese photographer's assistant, and the two form a bond that transcends their different worlds. Akimi Yoshida's manga, serialized from 1985 to 1994 in Bessatsu Shōjo Comic, broke from the romantic fantasies typical of girls' comics with its realistic art and action-packed storytelling. The series' mature themes and homoerotic undertones drew a wide crossover audience, and it has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.
Yoshida's work is a standout in the shōjo genre, blending crime thriller elements with deep emotional resonance. The English translation by Viz Media, which began in 1997, introduced Banana Fish to American readers early in the manga boom. The series has since been adapted into a popular 24-episode anime in 2018, directed by Hiroko Utsumi and produced by MAPPA. With its compelling plot, sharp dialogue, and memorable characters, Banana Fish remains a landmark in manga, influencing countless stories about male relationships. This edition collects the complete series in a single volume, offering over 1,000 pages of gripping narrative.
