Bamse
"The World's Strongest Bear"
Rune Andréasson
Overview
A half-page Sunday strip in 1966 introduced Swedish readers to a brown bear with an unusual power source: dunderhonung, a honey brewed by his grandmother that makes him the world's strongest bear. Rune Andréasson had already tested the character in television shorts that year, but the newspaper strip and the 1973 launch of a dedicated magazine turned Bamse into a fixture of Swedish childhood. The premise is simple and durable. Strength is not the point. Kindness is.
Andréasson drew every strip until 1975 and kept writing scripts until 1990. Francisco Tora took over the artwork in 1976, Bo Michanek joined in 1983, and Andréasson continued painting covers until 1992. Claes Reimerthi and Tony Cronstam were among the creators who arrived after that handover. The magazine has never really stopped, which makes it one of the longest-running children's comics in Scandinavia.
Family life reshaped the series in the 1980s. Bamse became a father to triplets in 1982 and a fourth child in 1986, and his friend Lille Skutt had a child around the same time. The children aged in real time until about 1990, when they settled at roughly nine years old as permanent third-graders. Stories began addressing gender equality directly. In 1989, Skalman recognized that Bamse's daughter Brumma had an intellectual disability, later described as being on the autism spectrum, and the comic opened a conversation about inclusion that few children's titles were having at the time.
Collected hardbound volumes gather the early Sunday strips and magazine stories, giving the material a second life on family bookshelves. Outside the page, Bamses Värld opened at Kolmården Wildlife Park in 1998 with theater performances, restaurants, and buildings lifted from the comic. A new English-language educational adventure game arrived in late 2025, and Rights & Brands expanded its licensing role across Scandinavia in 2024. The bear travels further than he used to.
