Overview
Baldur's Gate 3 is a role-playing video game developed and published by Larian Studios, released in 2023 as the third main installment in the Baldur's Gate series. It adapts Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition rules into a sprawling, reactive digital world. Players create or select a character, recruit a party of fully voiced companions, and journey across the Forgotten Realms to remove a mind-controlling tadpole from their heads. The game offers extraordinary freedom: dialogue, dice rolls, and player actions shape the narrative, relationships, and the fate of entire regions. Combat is turn-based and tactical, but stealth, persuasion, and environmental creativity are equally viable. A single playthrough can exceed 100 hours, with branching paths that reward experimentation.
The story begins aboard a mind flayer nautiloid, where the protagonist is infected with a tadpole. After crash-landing, they seek a cure while contending with factions like the druidic Emerald Grove, the goblin Cult of the Absolute, and companions including the vampire spawn Astarion, the wizard Gale, and the cleric Shadowheart. The plot expands to involve the Chosen of the dead gods Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul, who control the Absolute. Choices lead to multiple endings, from redemption to embracing dark urges. The game's reactivity extends to minor NPCs and environmental details, with consequences sometimes emerging dozens of hours later.
Developed by Larian Studios under director Swen Vincke, with lead writer Adam Smith and composer Borislav Slavov, the game entered early access on October 6, 2020, on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The full release launched on August 3, 2023, for Windows, followed by macOS and PlayStation 5 on September 6, and Xbox Series X/S on December 8. It runs on Larian's Divinity Engine 4.0, supporting ray-traced shadows and reflections, HDR, DLSS, and FSR. The game sold over 2.5 million copies in early access and reached 875,000 concurrent players on Steam shortly after launch. By February 2024, total sales exceeded 10 million units across all platforms.
Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive. Metacritic scores sit at 96 for PC, with IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer all awarding perfect or near-perfect scores. Reviewers praised the depth of player choice, voice acting, motion capture, and faithful D&D adaptation. The game won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023, the DICE Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Games Awards, accumulating over 200 GOTY honors. Commercially, it generated over $90 million for Wizards of the Coast in its first quarter. Larian has released free updates adding epilogue content and quality-of-life features, but confirmed no paid expansions or sequel, as the studio moves to new projects.
Gameplay
Combat in Baldur's Gate 3 is turn-based, using the Dungeons & Dragons 5e action economy. Each character can move, take an action, and a bonus action per turn. Positioning, terrain, and elevation matter: pushing an enemy off a cliff or dropping a chandelier on a group are valid tactics. The game encourages creativity beyond direct combat, players can sneak past encounters, persuade enemies to stand down, or use spells like Speak with Dead to gather information. Dice rolls determine the success of most actions, with modifiers based on character stats and proficiencies.
Exploration is fully 3D, with a vertical world that rewards curiosity. Hidden passages, trapped chests, and environmental puzzles are common. The party can split up to scout or set up ambushes. A robust crafting system allows combining items for potions, poisons, and coatings. The inventory system is grid-based, requiring management of weight and space. Short and long rests restore resources but advance certain quest timers, adding strategic pressure. The game also features a dynamic weather and day-night cycle that affects visibility and NPC behavior.
Character progression follows D&D 5e classes and subclasses, from Fighter and Wizard to Paladin and Sorcerer. Multiclassing is available. Each level-up grants new abilities, spells, or feats. Companions have unique class specializations tied to their stories. The game includes a robust character creator with options for race, background, appearance, and ability scores. Origin characters offer pre-defined backstories with unique quests and dialogue. The Dark Urge origin adds a violent compulsion, allowing players to resist or embrace it, with major narrative consequences.
Story
The player's character is abducted by mind flayers and infected with a tadpole that will transform them into a mind flayer. The nautiloid ship crashes in the wilderness near Baldur's Gate. The protagonist must find a cure while navigating a conflict between the druids of the Emerald Grove and a goblin army serving the Absolute, a mysterious entity controlling tadpole-infected creatures. Along the way, they encounter potential companions: the githyanki warrior Lae'zel, the vampire spawn Astarion, the wizard Gale, the cleric Shadowheart, the warlock Wyll, and the barbarian Karlach. Each has personal quests that intertwine with the main plot.
The story expands to reveal the Absolute is controlled by the Chosen of the Dead Three, Ketheric Thorm (Myrkul), Enver Gortash (Bane), and Orin the Red (Bhaal). They seek to dominate the Sword Coast using the tadpole army. The player must gather allies, investigate ancient ruins, and make moral choices that determine the fate of the region. Key locations include the Underdark, the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and the city of Baldur's Gate itself. The climax involves infiltrating the Chosen's fortress and confronting the Netherbrain, the source of the Absolute's power.
The ending branches dramatically. Players can destroy the Netherbrain, control it, or side with it. Companion fates depend on completed quests and relationship choices. The Dark Urge origin offers a path of redemption or full embrace of Bhaal's legacy. Multiple epilogue sequences show the aftermath. Larian's free updates added additional endings and a proper epilogue party scene, addressing early criticism of abrupt conclusions.
