Baku State University
Azerbaijan"The oldest and most prestigious public research university in Azerbaijan"
About
Baku State University, known locally as Bakı Dövlət Universiteti, stands as the oldest and most significant higher education institution in Azerbaijan. Founded on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the short-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, it opened its doors with an initial cohort of 1,094 students across three faculties: History and Philology, Physics and Mathematics, and Law and Medicine. The first rector was V.I. Razumovsky, a surgeon from Kazan University who had been exiled to the region, setting a rigorous academic tone that has persisted for over a century.
Today the university operates as a comprehensive public entity headquartered in Baku, offering 55 bachelor's and 153 master's degree programs across 16 majors. Its campus sits in the heart of the city's cultural district, serving thousands of students annually while maintaining a strong focus on research in fields ranging from molecular biology to international relations. The institution has seen enrollment double between the 2020 and 2022 academic years, reflecting its growing appeal and capacity to train professionals for the modern economy.
Under the leadership of current rector Elchin Babayev, BSU continues to expand its international footprint through partnerships with institutions in China, Kazakhstan, Israel, and Uzbekistan. Recent initiatives include the Eco Space hub launched in 2024 to promote sustainability and green innovation, alongside efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into the educational framework. While specific budget figures remain undisclosed, the university's continuous infrastructure development signals substantial state backing and its status as a cornerstone of Azerbaijani intellectual life.
Mission
The university aims to train highly qualified professionals and advance research across a broad spectrum of disciplines. It offers 16 majors encompassing 55 bachelor's and 153 master's degree programs designed to meet evolving societal needs. BSU is committed to integrating modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital transformation, into its educational framework. The institution also prioritizes sustainability and green innovation through initiatives like the Eco Space hub while fostering international partnerships to enhance academic exchange and cultural understanding.
History
The university's roots trace back to the short-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which established BSU in 1919 to meet the growing need for higher education in the region. Its first academic year saw 1,094 students enroll, with instruction initially in Russian and Azerbaijani. The early faculty included exiled scholars from Russia, such as the surgeon V.I. Razumovsky, who served as rector until 1920. Under Soviet rule, the institution was restructured and expanded, adding faculties in chemistry, geology, and other fields. The 1930s brought a period of consolidation, with the university absorbing several smaller institutes. During World War II, many students and staff joined the war effort, yet the university continued to operate, albeit with reduced numbers. The post-war era saw a surge in enrollment and the construction of new buildings on the current campus. After Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991, BSU underwent significant modernization, introducing new programs in economics, international relations, and information technology. In recent years, the university has embraced digital transformation, launching initiatives in artificial intelligence and sustainability, such as the Eco Space hub, to align with global educational trends.
