Bad Idea Right?

August 11, 2023 marked the arrival of "Bad Idea Right?" as the second single from Olivia Rodrigo's sophomore album Guts. The track captures a specific moment of impulsive regret where an individual decides to text an ex despite knowing it is a terrible choice. Rodrigo and her longtime collaborator Dan Nigro crafted lyrics that frame this reckless behavior as both funny and inevitable, turning a private internal monologue into a public anthem.

The song abandons the gothic orchestration of its predecessor "Vampire" for a high-energy pop-punk sound driven by distorted guitars and a propulsive drumbeat. Critics noted how the production blends early 2000s pop-punk influences with Rodrigo's signature pop sensibilities to create a sonic landscape that feels urgent and chaotic. Her vocal delivery shifts between a conversational tone in the verses and a soaring, anthemic chorus, mirroring the conflict between logic and impulse. [edit]
