    About This Song

The Shirelles stepped into Scepter Records in January 1961 to record a song that would define the girl group sound. Luther Dixon produced the session, guiding the quartet through a track written by himself, Burt Bacharach, and Mack David. The resulting single hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 that March, driven by a driving rhythm section and the group's tight harmonies.

John Lennon later took the lead vocal on The Beatles' cover during sessions for their debut album Please Please Me in November 1962. George Martin handled production duties for this version, which stripped away some of the polished sheen of the original to reveal a rawer, faster rock edge. Their rendition appeared as the third track on Side Two of the album, helping bridge the gap between American soul and the British Invasion.
