Based in Arlington, Virginia, the site takes its name from the Greek word "axios," meaning "worthy." Its content is designed for quick consumption, with most articles running under 300 words and employing bullet points. The site also produces a suite of daily and weekly newsletters, including Mike Allen's Axios AM, which succeeded his Politico Playbook. In 2022, Cox Enterprises acquired Axios for $525 million, signaling the brand's growth and influence in digital media.

Axios built its reputation on the concept of Smart Brevity, a trademarked style that prioritizes concise, scannable reporting. The company expanded beyond its core news site with Axios on HBO, an Emmy-winning docu-news series that ran from 2018 to 2021. In 2021, Axios HQ was spun out as a separate software arm, offering an AI-powered internal communications platform for enterprises. Axios HQ raised a $20 million Series A round and later acquired Mixing Board in January 2025 to enhance its B2B offerings.
