Avalon's story began in 1995 when Norman Miller of Proper Management approached Grant Cunningham, A&R director at Sparrow Records, with an idea for a pop vocal group. Cunningham heard singer Michael Passons at a showcase and immediately signed him as the first member. Janna Potter, who had been singing with the Christian band Truth, joined next, followed by Jody McBrayer, also from Truth, and Nikki Hassman. The quartet made an uncredited, last-minute appearance on the Young Messiah Farewell tour in 1995, before their debut album was even released. Their self-titled debut arrived in 1996, producing four number-one Christian singles, including "Give it Up," "This Love," and "Picture Perfect World." Early lineup changes saw Tabitha Fair replaced by Nikki Hassman, and Cherie Adams later taking over. Michael Passons left in 2003, and Greg Long stepped in, marrying Janna in the process. Jody McBrayer departed in 2007 due to a heart condition but returned in 2018. Through all the changes, Janna Long remained the constant thread, guiding the group through two decades of music and ministry.
