Australian Border Force
Australia"Protecting Australia's border and enabling legitimate travel and trade"
About
The Australian Border Force (ABF) is Australia's frontline agency for managing the country's borders. It operates under the Department of Home Affairs and handles everything from customs enforcement and immigration compliance to investigations and detention. The ABF is the public face of border control, with officers in airports, seaports, and offshore locations, working to facilitate legitimate travel and trade while intercepting illegal activity.
Led by Commissioner Michael Outram, the ABF employs around 5,800 people, including uniformed officers, investigators, and marine crew. Its Marine Unit functions as a coast guard, patrolling Australia's vast maritime domain. The agency's annual budget exceeds $1.5 billion, reflecting its broad mandate. While not a traditional entertainment property, the ABF has been featured in documentaries and news reports, offering a glimpse into its high-stakes operations. Its work has drawn both praise for protecting national security and criticism over detention policies, making it a subject of ongoing public debate.
Mission
The ABF's mission is to protect Australia's border and enable legitimate travel and trade. This means enforcing customs and immigration laws, intercepting illegal goods and people, and supporting the nation's economic prosperity by keeping trade flowing smoothly. Officers work at airports, seaports, and offshore locations, balancing security with facilitation.
History
The Australian Border Force came into existence on July 1, 2015, when the border enforcement functions of the former Australian Customs and Border Protection Service were consolidated into a single, uniformed command structure. This restructure aimed to create a more integrated and responsive border agency, aligning with the newly formed Department of Home Affairs.
Since then, the ABF has evolved to meet emerging challenges, including modernizing its fleet and surveillance capabilities. In 2026, it introduced new Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats and Global 6500 surveillance aircraft, enhancing its ability to monitor Australia's vast coastline.
