Egoyan's career is marked by critical acclaim and a devoted following. He has won eight Genie and Canadian Screen Awards, and his films have been celebrated at Cannes, Berlin, and Toronto. His two Academy Award nominations for The Sweet Hereafter placed him among the most respected directors of his generation. He has received the Dan David Prize, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, and a lifetime achievement award from the International Film Festival of India. His work has been recognized with ten honorary degrees and the highest level of the Order of Canada.

He received the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes for Exotica and the Grand Prix from the Belgian Film Critics Association. The Sweet Hereafter won several prizes at Cannes and earned him two Academy Award nominations. He has also received the Dan David Prize (2008), the Governor General's Performing Arts Award (2015), and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Film Festival of India (2017).
