    About

Founded on March 7, 1947, by Luis Alberto Villegas López, Atlético Nacional began as a municipal team in Medellín before adopting its current identity in 1950. The club holds a rare distinction in Colombian football: it is one of only three teams to have played in every single first-division tournament since the league started. A major turning point arrived in 1996 when Organización Ardila Lülle took control, restructuring the entity into a professional corporation that guides the club to this day.

The squad competes in the Categoría Primera A and plays home matches at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot, which seats roughly 45,943 fans. CONMEBOL estimates their support base exceeds 15 million people, making them the most popular team in the country. Their nickname, El Verde de las Montañas, reflects their deep roots in the Antioquia region, while Los Reyes de Copas honors their record-breaking collection of trophies.

National pride peaked in 1989 when the team became the first Colombian club to win the Copa Libertadores after defeating Olimpia of Paraguay. They followed that triumph by beating AC Milan in the Intercontinental Cup held in Tokyo. This era established them as a continental powerhouse with multiple Copa Sudamericana titles and numerous domestic league championships to their name.

    History

The rivalry known as the Clásico Colombiano against América de Cali defines much of the club's cultural impact. Matches between these two sides draw massive crowds and intense national attention as they represent the clash of Colombia's two most successful franchises. Locally, the Antioqueño Derby against Independiente Medellín creates another fierce atmosphere where city neighbors compete for regional supremacy.

Fan culture revolves around the dominant green color and a deafening presence at the Atanasio Girardot. Supporters maintain this energy despite frequent travel demands and high stakes in every fixture. Recent activity shows the team managing significant roster changes in 2026, including the permanent acquisition of defender Andrés Reyes from San Diego FC and the departure of centerback Juan José Arias to Real Salt Lake.
