"The first color handheld console with a built-in backlight"

    Overview

Formerly known as the Handy, this fourth-generation handheld console arrived in September 1989 to challenge the monochrome dominance of Nintendo's Game Boy. Epyx designed the hardware using former Amiga engineers before Atari Corporation acquired the project and handled distribution. The system distinguished itself by featuring a liquid-crystal display capable of showing up to 512 colors simultaneously from a palette of 4096, alongside a rare built-in backlight that eliminated the need for external light sources.

Under the hood, a 4 MHz Motorola 65C02 processor worked with a custom 16-bit blitter to render graphics and handle scrolling effects that outpaced many contemporaries. The library grew to 71 titles spanning side-scrolling action games and complex turn-based strategy simulations involving resource grids. Players could also connect multiple units via a proprietary link cable to enable local multiplayer sessions with stereo sound.

    Gameplay

The hardware capabilities allowed developers to create pseudo-3D effects and smooth scrolling within the confines of a portable device. Users navigated fast-paced side-scrolling levels or managed intricate resource grids in strategic battles. The inclusion of a backlight meant gamers did not need to hunt for a lamp to play dark rooms, while the stereo audio provided a richer soundscape than typical mono speakers of the era.
