Aston Villa Football Club is a professional football club based in Aston, Birmingham, England. Founded in 1874 by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel, it is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in English football. The team competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, and has played at its home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. Villa is a founding member of both the Football League (1888) and the Premier League (1992), a distinction shared only with Everton.

The club's early dominance was shaped by George Ramsay, appointed as the world's first professional football manager in 1886. Under his leadership, Villa won five First Division titles and three FA Cups before 1900, pioneering a short passing style that revolutionized the game. Villa's 128 goals in the 1930-31 season remains the all-time top-flight record. After a mid-20th century decline, Ron Saunders restored glory in the 1970s, winning the league in 1980-81 and the European Cup in 1982, followed by the European Super Cup. In recent years, Villa endured relegation in 2016 and spent three seasons in the Championship before returning to the Premier League in 2019. Aston Villa was founded in March 1874 by four members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel in Handsworth: Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price, and a fourth individual. The club played its first match against a local cricket team and quickly grew. In 1885, Villa was instrumental in the legalization of professionalism in football, and three years later, Villa director William McGregor founded the Football League. The club won its first league title in 1894 and added five more by 1910, becoming the most successful English club of the Victorian era.

The interwar period saw Villa remain competitive, with a sixth FA Cup in 1920 and a seventh league title in 1981. The 1930-31 team scored 128 goals, a record that still stands. However, the club declined after World War II, suffering relegation to the Second Division in 1936 and again in 1959. The 1960s were particularly bleak, culminating in relegation to the Third Division in 1970. Doug Ellis took over in 1968, and under manager Ron Saunders, Villa returned to the top flight in 1975. Saunders led Villa to the league title in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982, beating Bayern Munich 1-0 in the final.

Villa was a founding member of the Premier League in 1992 and regularly qualified for Europe under managers like John Gregory and Martin O'Neill. However, financial troubles and poor management led to relegation in 2016. After three seasons in the Championship, the club returned to the Premier League in 2019 under Dean Smith. In 2022, Unai Emery took over and guided Villa to a seventh-place finish in 2023 and Champions League qualification in 2024, marking a remarkable resurgence. [edit]
