Overview
Julius Caesar has a new plan to crush the one Gaulish village that refuses to submit: gentrification. In Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods, the Roman conqueror orders a luxury apartment complex built right beside Asterix and Obelix's home, hoping to seduce the locals with Roman comforts. The 2014 film, directed by Louis Clichy from a story by Alexandre Astier, brings the beloved comic to life in 3D animation for the first time. Astier co-directed and wrote the screenplay with Jean-Remi Francois and Philip LaZebnik. Roger Carel voices Asterix in his final film role before retirement, with Guillaume Briat as Obelix, Lionnel Astier as Vitalstatistix, Serge Papagalli as Geriatrix, and Florence Foresti as the Roman matron Angina. Produced by M6, Belvision Studios, and Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie on a budget of around €31 million, the film opened in France on 26 November 2014 across 696 theaters. It grossed more than $51 million worldwide and earned generally favorable reviews, plus an IFMCA Award nomination for Best Original Score for an Animated Feature. The blend of slapstick comedy, adventure, and sly social satire stays true to the spirit of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's creation while updating it for a new generation.
