    About

The Asian Football Confederation serves as the central authority for association football, beach soccer, and futsal across the Asian continent. Established on May 8, 1954, in Manila, Philippines, this non-profit organization coordinates the sport in nearly every nation and territory within the region. As one of FIFA's six continental confederations, it holds the power to shape the competitive calendar for nations and clubs alike.

Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the AFC oversees a vast network of member associations that now numbers 47. The organization manages a robust schedule of competitions ranging from the premier AFC Asian Cup held every four years to the top-tier club tournament known as the AFC Champions League Elite. It also runs secondary tiers like the AFC Challenge League and dedicated championships for futsal and beach soccer.

Leadership falls under Chairman Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa of Bahrain, who has led the confederation since 2013. His tenure has seen the AFC align closely with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a shift marked by an October 2026 endorsement for Infantino's re-election. This political maneuvering sparked internal controversy, leading to the resignation of Japanese Vice President Takeshi Okada and a judicial review filed by the Jordan Football Association against the federation.

    Mission

The AFC exists to develop and regulate football at both national and club levels across Asia. Its mandate focuses on expanding the sport's reach, improving infrastructure, and ensuring fair competition through various commissions and committees dedicated to development, medical standards, and ethics.

    History

Eight nations gathered in Manila in 1954 to form the Asian Football Confederation. Founding members included Burma (now Myanmar), Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Their goal was to unify a fragmented football landscape under a single administrative umbrella to facilitate international competition.

Membership has grown significantly since those early days. The organization now encompasses 47 national associations spread across five regional federations. These subdivisions, covering Southeast, East, Central, West, and South Asia, operate under the AFC's umbrella to coordinate local tournaments and developmental programs.

Recent years have seen the AFC finalize schedules for major events like the 2027 Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host. The opening match is set for January 7, 2027, between Saudi Arabia and Palestine in Riyadh. The confederation continues to balance traditional governance structures with modern demands for accountability.
