ASCII Media Works

ASCII Media Works is a Japanese publishing brand under Kadokawa Future Publishing, best known for its Dengeki line of magazines, light novels, and manga that anchor otaku culture. The brand emerged on April 1, 2008, when MediaWorks legally absorbed ASCII Corporation, with Kiyoshi Takano, formerly of ASCII, becoming its first president and CEO. The merger responded to the rapid growth of internet and mobile media, creating a stronger combined publisher. On October 1, 2013, ASCII Media Works transitioned into an internal division of Kadokawa Corporation, integrating its operations into the larger conglomerate while retaining its distinct identity.

The brand's output spans entertainment and computing. Its Dengeki imprint includes magazines like Dengeki Daioh and Dengeki G's Magazine, plus the light novel house Dengeki Bunko, which has launched hits such as Sword Art Online and A Certain Magical Index. On the tech side, it publishes Weekly ASCII and other IT titles. It also reaches female readers with Sylph and Dengeki Girl's Style. The company runs annual contests, including the Dengeki Novel Prize and Dengeki Comic Grand Prix, to discover new talent, feeding a pipeline that adapts works across manga, anime, and games.

Financially, the company reported revenue of ¥493.5 million in 2013, with 364 employees at that time. As a division of Kadokawa, it no longer reports independently. Its competitors include major Japanese publishers like Shueisha, Kodansha, and Shogakukan, while within the Kadokawa group it works alongside sister imprints like Kadokawa Shoten. [edit]
