    Overview

Before the undead overran Las Vegas, a mild-mannered bank teller named Ludwig Dieter got caught up in a very different kind of chaos. In Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder's zombie heist film Army of the Dead, Dieter is recruited by a mysterious woman to crack a series of legendary safes across Europe. Directed by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer, this action-comedy trades the undead for a high-stakes puzzle box of a plot, blending slick heist thrills with a healthy dose of humor.

Schweighöfer reprises his role as the safecracking nerd, joined by Nathalie Emmanuel as the enigmatic Gwendoline, who pulls him into a world of international crime. The cast also includes Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen, each bringing their own flavor to the crew. With a budget of $30 million, the film grossed nearly $47 million worldwide, proving that audiences were hungry for more of this universe. Co-written by Zack Snyder and Shay Hatten, and scored by Hans Zimmer and Steve Mazzaro, Army of Thieves delivers a lighter, more playful tone than its predecessor, even as the zombie apocalypse looms in the background. It's a standalone adventure that doesn't require prior knowledge of the franchise, though fans will spot the connections.

Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert is a German bank teller whose life is as beige as his cardigan. By day he processes deposits and withdrawals; by night he devours YouTube videos about legendary safecrackers, nursing a secret obsession with the craft. His particular fascination is a set of three safes designed by the eccentric master Hans Wagner, each named after a piece from Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle: the Rhinegold, the Valkyrie, and the Twilight of the Gods. No one has ever cracked them, and Sebastian dreams of being the first.

When he posts a video demonstrating his skills, it catches the eye of Gwendoline, a brilliant and elusive criminal wanted by Interpol. She tracks him down and offers him the adventure of a lifetime: a chance to crack all three Wagner safes, scattered across Europe. Sebastian, who adopts the alias Ludwig Dieter, joins her crew, which includes Korina, a sharp-tongued getaway driver with a hidden past; Brad Cage, a muscle-bound American ex-soldier with a short fuse; and Rolph, a bumbling tech expert who provides comic relief. Hot on their trail is Delacroix, an Interpol agent who has been hunting Gwendoline for years and is starting to crack under the pressure.

The crew's first stop is Paris, where they break into a high-security bank to steal the Rhinegold. Sebastian's nerves nearly get the better of him, but with Gwendoline's encouragement, he manages to open the safe, and the team celebrates their success. From there, they move to Prague, where the Valkyrie is housed in a heavily guarded castle. The heist goes off without a hitch, but tensions begin to simmer beneath the surface. Brad, who is clearly attracted to Gwendoline, resents the growing bond between her and Sebastian. Meanwhile, news reports about a mysterious outbreak in Las Vegas start to filter into their world, a distant but ominous reminder that something is very wrong.

In St. Moritz, the crew prepares for the final heist: the Twilight of the Gods, locked in a vault beneath a luxury bank. As they plan, Gwendoline reveals that she has an ulterior motive, but she keeps the details close to her chest. Sebastian, who has fallen for her, is torn between his desire for a normal life and the thrill of the chase. The heist is the most dangerous yet, and the crew must navigate laser grids, motion sensors, and a security guard who is a little too attentive. As the plan unfolds, Sebastian must decide whether he is truly a safecracker or just a bank teller with a party trick.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Army of Thieves is a lighthearted heist comedy that charms with Matthias Schweighöfer's endearing performance and clever safecracking sequences, even if it lacks the stakes and spectacle of its zombie predecessor. It's a fun, if forgettable, expansion of the Army of the Dead universe.
