    About

The University of Arkansas athletic program fields nineteen varsity squads competing in NCAA Division I, with the majority of its sports participating in the Southeastern Conference. The institution adopted the Razorback moniker in 1910 after students rejected the original Cardinals nickname following a contest against LSU where coach Hugo Bezdek compared his team to feral hogs. This unique porcine identity remains exclusive among major American collegiate teams.

Football serves as the primary revenue driver for the department, playing home games at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. The venue consistently ranks among the loudest in college football, creating a distinct home-field advantage that intimidates visiting opponents. Basketball matches take place at Bud Walton Arena, a facility holding over 19,000 fans known for its electric atmosphere and high attendance figures.

    History

Frank Broyles established the modern foundation for the program when he served as head football coach from 1958 through 1976. His tenure included a national championship victory in 1964 and an Orange Bowl title during the same year. The university joined the Southeastern Conference in 1991, leaving the Southwest Conference behind to align with traditional powerhouses like Alabama and LSU.

Nolan Richardson transformed men's basketball by leading the squad to the 1994 NCAA National Championship. The team reached the Final Four again in 1995 and had previously appeared in 1978. Other sports have achieved significant success, including multiple SEC titles in women's golf and gymnastics. As of October 2026, the football team navigates a difficult stretch of conference play against rivals such as Texas A&M Aggies.
