    About

Walk into Arkane's offices in Lyon and you'll find a studio that has spent a quarter century building the same kind of game from different angles. Raphaël Colantonio founded the company on October 1, 1999, after years working in the French games industry. The first release, Arx Fatalis in 2002, was a first-person dungeon crawler with a rune-based spellcasting system you drew by hand with the mouse. That idea, that a game should hand you tools and let you figure out what to do with them, has never really left.

A second office opened in Austin, Texas, in July 2006, and for eighteen years the two studios traded projects and staff. The Austin branch closed in May 2024 after Redfall landed badly, a casualty of ZeniMax-wide cuts that followed Microsoft's $7.5 billion purchase of the parent company in March 2021. Lyon kept going, and it is Lyon that still carries the name today.

Inside the studio, the design language is specific. Levels are built as overlapping routes rather than corridors. Powers like Blink in Dishonored or the Gloo Cannon in Prey exist to break the intended path, not to decorate it. Playtesters are encouraged to find the route the designer didn't plan. The team talks about this in developer commentary and level-design breakdowns far more than in trailers, which is part of why the audience skews toward people who read patch notes for fun.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Arkane Studios still in business?
As of late October 2026, yes. Arkane Lyon is still operating and still developing Marvel's Blade. But multiple outlets reported on October 23, 2026 that Microsoft has given the studio until November 13, 2026 to find a buyer or face closure, with roughly 217 jobs at risk. The Austin studio, Arkane Austin, already closed in May 2024.
Why were Arkane Studios shut down?
Only the Austin branch has actually closed, in May 2024, during ZeniMax-wide layoffs that followed Redfall's rough launch. Lyon is a different story: reports describe Microsoft divesting the studio as part of a broader Xbox strategy shift, even though developers say the team was performing well. The framing from inside the studio, per press reports, is that they were victims of that strategy change rather than of their own output.
What is Arkane working on now?
Marvel's Blade, the single-player vampire-hunter action game announced in 2023. Reporting from October 2026 says the project is nearly finished and remains in development at Arkane Lyon despite the closure threat. Whether it ships under Arkane's banner or a new owner's depends on what happens before the November 13 deadline.
    Who owns Arkane Studios?
ZeniMax Media has owned Arkane since 2010. Microsoft bought ZeniMax for $7.5 billion in a deal that closed in March 2021, which put Arkane in the first-party Xbox portfolio. As of October 2026, Microsoft is reportedly seeking a buyer for Arkane Lyon, so ownership may change hands again.
What games has Arkane Studios made?
The catalogue runs from Arx Fatalis (2002) and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006) through Dishonored (2012), Dishonored 2 (2016), Prey (2017), Deathloop (2021) and Redfall (2023). Marvel's Blade is in development. The Austin studio also contributed to Prey and led Redfall.
