Ark: Survival Evolved
"Tame dinosaurs, survive the wild, uncover the truth of the ARKs."
Overview
Ark: Survival Evolved strands you on a vast, hostile island where dinosaurs roam free and every day is a fight for survival. Developed by Studio Wildcard and released in August 2017, this action-adventure survival game drops you into a world where you must gather resources, craft tools, build shelters, and tame prehistoric creatures to stay alive. You can explore the open world from first-person or third-person view, on foot or mounted on a dino, using everything from improvised spears to high-caliber firearms to fend off predators and rival players. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes; in multiplayer, you can join tribes to share resources and structures, with PvE servers allowing combat only if both parties agree to a war event.
Development began in October 2014, and the game hit early access on PC in mid-2015. The team at Studio Wildcard, with help from Instinct Games, Effecto Studios, and Virtual Basement, researched real animal appearances but took creative liberties for gameplay. After two years of community feedback and updates, the full release arrived on Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, and macOS, with mobile and Nintendo Switch versions following in 2018. The Switch port was particularly rough, suffering from poor graphics and performance issues that drew sharp criticism.
Critics were split. Many praised the sheer scope and the thrill of taming a T. rex, but others pointed to the steep difficulty curve, repetitive tasks, and an overwhelming amount of content. Despite the mixed reception, Ark spawned a franchise: spin-offs like Ark Park and PixArk, a remaster titled Ark: Survival Ascended in 2023, and a sequel, Ark 2, announced in 2020. The original game's servers were eventually shut down as players were pushed toward the remaster, a move that forced many to repurchase the game and stirred controversy. Love it or hate it, Ark has carved out a niche as one of the most ambitious survival games of its era.
Gameplay
Ark's core loop revolves around gathering resources, crafting tools and weapons, building bases, and taming dinosaurs. Taming is a central mechanic: you knock out a creature, feed it, and wait for it to bond. Once tamed, dinos can be ridden, used for transport, or set to defend your base. Breeding adds another layer, letting you raise generations with better stats. Combat ranges from primitive spears to high-tech firearms, and survival depends on managing hunger, thirst, and temperature. The game world is vast, with dynamic weather and day/night cycles that affect gameplay. Multiplayer is a big draw: you can join tribes, build massive structures, and wage war on PvP servers, or cooperate on PvE servers where combat is restricted unless both sides agree to a war event. The game also supports dedicated servers, though running one requires serious hardware.
Story
The game opens with you waking on a beach with no memory of how you got there. Scattered explorer notes and boss encounters slowly reveal the truth: the island is an ARK, one of many massive space stations terraformed to preserve life from Earth. Each expansion adds to the lore, uncovering the story of a dying humanity and the mysterious Overseer. The overarching narrative culminates in confronting the ARK's ultimate challenges, with the Genesis expansions pushing the story toward a sci-fi conclusion involving simulated worlds and artificial intelligence.
