Arirang TV
South Korea"Korea for the World"
About
Arirang TV is a South Korean international English-language television network operated by the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation (KIBF). Launched in 1997, the channel broadcasts news, cultural programs, documentaries, and entertainment to 134 countries via satellite, cable, and IPTV. It is funded primarily through government subsidies from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, with an annual budget of roughly 50 to 60 billion KRW (about $38 to $45 million USD) as of 2023. The network employs between 300 and 400 staff across its headquarters in Seoul's Yongsan district and news bureaus in Washington D.C., New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, and Dubai.
Arirang TV was established to project a positive image of South Korea abroad, promote Korean culture, and provide a Korean perspective on global affairs. Its name derives from the traditional folk song "Arirang," symbolizing the channel's mission to share Korea's heritage and contemporary life with international audiences. The network has been a key driver of the Korean Wave (Hallyu), offering English-language access to K-pop, K-dramas, and traditional arts. It also serves as a rare source of outside information for North Koreans who can receive the signal via satellite.
The network has faced challenges, including a 2011 embezzlement scandal in which management underpaid employee salaries and funneled the difference into secret bank accounts, totaling about 1.5 billion KRW ($1.3 million). The incident led to the resignation of top executives and a government audit. In 2013, accusations of political interference surfaced, with claims that the government pressured the network to downplay negative news. Despite these issues, Arirang TV remains a central soft power tool for South Korea, especially during major events like the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mission
Arirang TV's mission is to introduce Korea to the world and the world to Korea by delivering accurate, balanced news and diverse cultural content in English. The network aims to enhance Korea's global image, promote Korean culture including K-pop, K-drama, and traditional arts, and serve as a bridge for international audiences seeking reliable information about Korea. It operates as a public service broadcaster, focusing on cultural exchange and soft power rather than commercial revenue.
History
The Korea International Broadcasting Foundation (KIBF) was established on February 3, 1997, and Arirang TV launched its first broadcast on August 1, 1997, initially called Arirang Broadcasting. The network began with limited hours and gradually expanded to 24-hour broadcasting in 2005. In 2002, Arirang Radio launched as an English-language radio service. The network introduced high-definition broadcasting in 2014 and underwent a rebranding in 2018, adopting a new logo and the slogan "Korea for the World."
Arirang TV expanded its digital footprint significantly in the 2020s. Its YouTube channel surpassed 1 million subscribers in 2020, and the network launched a streaming service called Arirang On in 2024. In 2023, selected documentaries and series became available on Netflix. The network announced a partnership with Google in 2025 to provide content on Google TV and Android TV platforms. Arirang TV continues to face competition from other Korean broadcasters like KBS World and MBC America, as well as global streaming services, but remains a key outlet for Korean soft power, with plans to expand into Africa and Latin America by 2026.
