Arc System Works

Arc System Works Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video game developer and publisher founded on May 12, 1988, by Minoru Kidooka. After spending six years at Sega, Kidooka left to start the company, initially incorporated as Arc Co., Ltd. The acronym ARC stands for Action, Revolution, Challenge. In its early days, the company had only about eight developers, most former Sega employees, and focused on contract work for Sega, Sammy, and Banpresto. They ported arcade games like Double Dragon to the Sega Master System and created NES versions of Namco titles such as Final Lap and Rolling Thunder. The company was renamed Arc System Works in 1991.

Arc System Works is best known as a fighting game specialist. Its original franchises include Guilty Gear, created by Daisuke Ishiwatari, and BlazBlue, spearheaded by Toshimichi Mori. The company also owns the Kunio-kun and Double Dragon series. In the licensed space, they developed Dragon Ball FighterZ, which became a massive critical and commercial success, along with Persona 4 Arena and its sequel, Granblue Fantasy Versus and Versus Rising, and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Their distinctive 2D/3D hybrid art style and deep mechanical complexity set them apart in the fighting game community.

As of December 2024, the company employs 223 people. Minoru Kidooka remains President and CEO, while Daisuke Ishiwatari serves as Chief Creative Officer. Toshimichi Mori was Chief Development Officer from 2003 until 2022. Arc System Works America handles North American publishing and esports tournament sponsorship. The company reported revenue of ¥680 million (approximately $4.5 million USD).
