“Apocalypto is a brutal, breathtaking spectacle that is as visually stunning as it is viscerally disturbing.”

United States"One man's survival is his family's only hope."
Mel Gibson directed this visceral historical action film set in the waning days of the Maya civilization. Rudy Youngblood stars as Jaguar Paw, a peaceful tribesman whose village is raided by a warlord named Zero Wolf (Raoul Max Trujillo). Captured and marched toward a Mayan city, Jaguar Paw must escape to save his pregnant wife and young son. Shot in Mexico's Veracruz jungle, the film cost $40 million and earned over $120 million worldwide. With brutal combat, minimal dialogue in Yucatec Maya, and James Horner's pounding score, Apocalypto plays like a survival thriller wrapped in ancient history. It earned strong reviews for its raw intensity and technical craft, holding a 7.6/10 on TMDB.

The story takes place in the 16th century, deep in the Mesoamerican jungle. Jaguar Paw lives in a small Maya village with his father Flint Sky, his pregnant wife Seven, and their young son. His father teaches him that fear is a sickness and that a man should face life without it. The village thrives on hunting and gathering, and life follows a steady rhythm of seasons and rituals.
That peace shatters when a raiding party led by the fierce Zero Wolf attacks. The invaders burn huts, kill elders, and capture the young men and women. Jaguar Paw hides his wife and son in a deep well, promising to return. But he is taken prisoner before he can escape. His father dies trying to protect him. The captives are bound together and forced on a brutal march through the jungle toward a massive Mayan city.
Along the way, the prisoners witness the decaying state of the once-great civilization. Famine and disease have spread. The ruling elite cling to power through fear and elaborate human sacrifices meant to appease angry gods after a recent solar eclipse. Jaguar Paw sees the terrifying scale of the city's rituals as other captives are led up the pyramid. He remembers his father's words and begins planning an escape, knowing his family waits in the well.
The journey tests every captive's will. Some give up hope. Others are executed or die from exhaustion. Jaguar Paw stays focused, studying his captors' movements and the terrain. He knows the jungle better than they do. The chase that follows becomes a race against time, with Zero Wolf determined to recapture him and the city's priests eager for another sacrifice.
