Aoashi

Ashito Aoi is a ninth-grader from Ehime Prefecture with raw talent and a special gift: the ability to see the entire football field with startling clarity, a vision he calls his "eagle eye." But he has no tactical discipline, no understanding of positioning, and a hot-headed streak. After a regional tournament, Tatsuya Fukuda, a coach from Tokyo City Esperion FC's youth academy, spots him and offers a chance to train at one of Japan's top programs. Leaving his small town and his family behind, Ashito moves to Tokyo and enters a world where every player is a prodigy.

The manga follows Ashito's grueling development as he learns that vision alone isn't enough. He must master team play, learn to read the game from the right-back position, and fight for a spot on a roster full of elite talents. The story is grounded in realistic tactics and training, with no supernatural elements, just hard work, strategy, and growth. Yugo Kobayashi writes and illustrates the series, with project supervisor Naohiko Ueno ensuring the football details are authentic.

Serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits since January 2015, Aoashi has collected over 40 volumes. It won the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category in 2019 and was nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2020. As of October 2024, the manga has over 20 million copies in circulation. The English edition is published by Viz Media under its Viz Signature imprint, with the first volume released on January 19, 2021.[edit]
