About This Song
Antología arrived in January 1997 as the fifth single from Shakira's third album, Pies Descalzos, the record that had turned the 19-year-old from Barranquilla into a household name across Latin America. Written with her regular collaborator and producer Luis Fernando Ochoa, the track is a slow Latin pop ballad built around acoustic guitar and Shakira's voice, with almost nothing else competing for attention. Sony Music released it across Spanish-speaking markets, where it became one of the most requested songs of her early catalog.
The song's premise is simple and a little unusual for a pop single: it is a thank-you note. Shakira sings to a former lover about everything he taught her, from how to read people to how to love without fear. There is no bitterness in it, and no big dramatic break. The tone is grateful, a little wistful, and it lets her lower register do most of the work. That restraint is part of why the song lasted. Pies Descalzos had already produced hits like Estoy Aquí and ¿Dónde Estás Corazón?, but Antología showed a different side of her songwriting, quieter and more grown-up.
Nearly three decades later the song found a second life on stage. During her 2026 Madrid residency, Shakira sang it as a duet for the first time with Laura Pausini around September 21, then brought out Dua Lipa as a surprise guest in early October for a version that outlets across Europe and the US covered for days. Neither guest had any obvious connection to the 1997 recording, which is exactly what made the moments land: a song from her teenage years, sung back to her by two of the biggest pop voices of the following generation.
